This release focuses on making authoring faster and more intuitive, improving upload reliability, and enhancing approval workflows — all while continuing to streamline the user experience across the platform. Read on to learn more.

Vuforia Editor

This release introduces several enhancements that make procedure creation more intuitive, approval workflows more transparent, and uploads more reliable:

  • Faster Authoring Workflow: A new Create Procedure button and improved icon labels make it easier to go from capture to procedure.
  • Improved Approval Management: Clear warnings now appear when reordering or adding approvers mid-workflow to avoid unintentional resets.
  • Easier Part Set Assignment: Add parts to a set directly from the 3D Viewer’s right-click menu, with smarter tooltips and button behavior.
  • More Reliable Uploads & Error Messaging: Uploads now retry after network issues, and error messages clearly explain file type issues.

Vuforia Vantage

This update also brings usability improvements to the web experience, helping users navigate procedures more efficiently:

  • Keyboard Shortcuts for Faster Navigation:
Use the down arrow to move to the next step and the up arrow to return to the previous step—making desktop navigation smoother.

External API

What's New in Vuforia Expert Capture?

We are excited to announce that our next release, 3.21.0, is now live! This release includes updates that work cohesively together to improve your experience authoring, viewing, and reviewing when utilizing Vuforia Expert Capture.

Vuforia Editor: More Control, Flexibility, & Automation

We've made multiple improvements to Editor that make the editor experience smoother and more adaptable:

  • Replace Entire 3D Models: You can now fully replace a 3D model file in a procedure—not just its state. Existing markers will be retained when possible (if referenced surfaces still exist), making it easier to update procedures with newer model revisions.
  • Additional Font Sizes: The image editor now supports a broader range of font sizes for greater customization.
  • Improved Email Alerts: Participants now automatically receive email notifications when it’s their turn to review and approve a procedure, keeping the process moving and everyone informed.

Vuforia Vantage: Smarter Viewing, Better Navigation

We’ve added new capabilities to enhance the end-user experience in Vantage, especially in web view:

  • Distinguish Parts Within a Step: Authors can define specific highlight colors per part, per step. Vantage users can still override them—but only within the current step.
  • Flashlight Toggle: A new option in the procedure menu lets you enable or disable the device flashlight.
  • Vantage (Web) Improvements: In the web version, users will now see a back button to return to the Library, can sort procedures by title or publish date, and use a new search bar to find procedures by title—now with publish date and version info displayed.

Distribution Center: Ensure Tracking of Use On the Shop Floor

  • Preview Control: Managers and admins can now disable Preview capabilities across mobile and web apps via the Distribution Center—preventing untracked use of published procedures in Vuforia Vantage and ensuring all executions are captured within Insights reports.

New URLs for Vuforia Expert Capture

Action Required: Our next Expert Capture Release (targeted for June 24th) will officially introduce new URLs. To ensure a smooth transition, please do the following by June 24th:

  1. Test & verify our new target URLs are accessible in case your company or locations are filtering URLs in your firewall:
  2. Update our Vantage app(s) on mobile and eyewear devices to 3.21 (or above).

There is no need to update your existing browser bookmarks. URLs referencing original URLs (vuforia.ptc.com) will be automatically re-directed to our new URLs above. We have made the new target URLs available with this release to help you test & verify now.

If you have any questions about these updates, please don't hesitate to reach out. We look forward to our next release and delivering continued innovation!

Vuforia Expert Capture - New Domain Name Change

Hello Vuforia Expert Capture Customers,

Starting Monday, May 12, 2025 - PTC will change the website addresses for all products on its SaaS platform to use one global domain (*.portal.ptc.com). We are providing this announcement to provide time for your IT & Network team to update their network configurations. This will eliminate risk of disruption to your users that need access to Vuforia Expert Capture's applications such as:

  • Vuforia Editor
  • Vuforia Distribution Center
  • Vuforia Vantage (iOS, Android, Hololens 2, RealWear and Apple Vision Pro*)
  • Vuforia Insights

What You Need To Do

Inform your IT & Network teams Vuforia Expert Capture will be under vuforia.portal.ptc.com (instead of vuforia.ptc.com) If your company performs URL filtering, then ask them to add *.portal.ptc.com to their allow lists if wildcard domains are supported. Otherwise, ensure these specific URLs are added to your allow lists to ensure uninterrupted access to Vuforia Expert Capture apps:

Additional Notes & Tips

  1. PTC Admin Center is already under portal.ptc.com (no change needed).
  2. PTC Start Page is also already under portal.ptc.com (no change needed).
  3. Updating bookmarks is encouraged.

One More Thing

Our 3.19.1 hotfix release supported a change in Microsoft Azure's Content Delivery Network (CDN) service is now delivering assets (videos, images) from:

  • U.S: https://atomiclioncms.azureedge.net
  • Europe: https://atomiclioncmseu1.azureedge.net

While you are updating your network configuration - please add the CDN domains to your allow lists. Our Help Center network configuration guide (see here) will be updated soon to also reflect the change above.

What's New In Vuforia Expert Capture?

Here's a spotlight on what's new in the Vuforia Expert Capture 3.20.0 release:

Mobile Capture is Now Available

With our first release of the new year, we are excited to announce Mobile Capture is now generally available to customers. Mobile Capture enables customers to scale operations by allowing them to capture, collect, and document content in real-time, using the phones and tablets you already have.

By streamlining each step, Mobile Capture empowers frontline workers to document their know-how by capturing and collecting steps and assets, providing the authors with the necessary information to produce and publish digital work instructions. No more physical manuals – just instant help!

Step Check Gains Further Enhancements

Building on the momentum of release 3.19.0, we are delighted to introduce new enhancements to Step Check, all aimed at furthering customer efficiency. Now, step checks can be shared between steps within the same procedure. For example, users can select a Step Check from a different step to carry over or discard for existing training data. Additionally, users can link or unlink steps as needed, anytime.

Moreover, users now have greater manual control! The Step Check thumbnail image for Pass or Fail State can be manually selected from an existing image via the image’s three-dot menu.

But that's not all!

With each release, we introduce numerous enhancements. Here are some additional key highlights from the latest update:

  • Model Target Tracking has been enhanced to be more robust with smooth, untextured surfaces, such as cars or pressed sheet metal parts.
  • Part Markers visualization has been improved. Previously, the interiors of parts were rendered, which could clutter the view. Now, the insides are no longer shown, making the visualization simpler and more intuitive, particularly for complex parts. Additionally, outlines of two-part markers will now be merged if they overlap within the camera view.

What's New In Vuforia Expert Capture?

Here's a spotlight on what's new in the Vuforia Expert Capture 3.19.0 release:

APIs and Integrations:
Self-Service with PTC Service Principals

We have been tirelessly working under the hood to make our APIs more expansive and easier to use so that you can integrate as-run procedure data or procedure execution data with your systems and workflows. In this release, we are happy to announce that our APIs are now compatible with PTC Service Principles. With service principals, admins can go into the PTC Admin Center, create the service principals, and immediately use the APIs. No requests to tech support, no waiting—just immediate self-service APIs when you need them!

Where can I use procedure data?

Our APIs offer access to a list of published procedures and retrieve run data and image feedback based on a procedure ID or serial number. Get started with our new APIs today to make AR an essential part of your workflow by connecting to other business systems, for example:

  • Connect to your Learning Management system to ensure your employees have met training requirements before starting new tasks in the field.
  • Connect to your Field Service Management System to record the completion of procedures executed as part of service and maintenance tickets.
  • Connect to your servers to store an audit history of the procedure and step completion status (pass/fail), including images captured during execution, for proof that work was completed as expected.
  • Connect to other work systems to enable frontline workers to directly access the Vuforia Expert capture catalog in their daily task management tool.

How to Create and Manage Service Principles

But that's not all!

With each release, we have a ton of new improvements. Here are just a few other highlights from the last releases:

  • Step Check™ Auto-Proceed on 'Pass' or 'Fail' - Authors can now configure Step Check to auto-proceed when the work was done correctly (pass) or incorrectly (fail).
  • iOS/Android  - Improved highlighting effect makes it easier for your workers to see through highlighted objects and not obstruct their view of the real-world object.
  • Depreciation: GET Method for Accessing Procedure Execution Data - Please be aware that the GET method for Accessing Procedure Execution Data will be deprecated in the 3.21.0 release (early 2025). Going forward, we recommend using the POST method.

    • You can also now use the 'Usure' filter to compile a list of all collected images that could not be identified as a "Pass" or "Fail" - another great starting point to help you decide if you need to improve object training, light conditions or other conditions for your procedure.
  • Step Check guided training on iOS/Android  - The Step Check guided training dome now automatically scales with the distance to the object to give users more flexibility when training Step Check.
